Workshop at Department of Architecture UET

By: Ar. Muhammad Faisal Rehman, Ar. Shabbir-U-Qureshi & Artist. Muneeb Aqib

The Department of Architecture University of Engineering & Technology Abbottabad Campus once again took the initiative of conducting a unique collaborative workshop at the foundation level, in which several architecture schools were invited. The concept promotes the synergy and integration of several diversified creative art disciplines including Architecture, Interior Design, Textile Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design and Visual Arts.

It advocates creativity and exploration within students of Architecture through analytical approach. It is always fascinating to conceive a two dimensional illustration/painting out of the box. It is worth realizing to understand the fact that the illustration is not confined within a speculated canvas, but there is a lot more to investigate within the hidden peripheries of addressed artifact. The procedures of exploration, identification, analysis, translation and transformation may be studied through an iterative approach so that every time a new version of expression is experienced. How about an illustrated painting or drawing as an architectonic spatial system? Sounds exciting! Sounds challenging! Sounds precarious! Sounds worth experimenting!

Let’s Experience Together!
The participating institutes included:

Every institute with different departmental representations sent one studio instructor with 10 students at first year level. These participants were grouped with the students of Department of Architecture UET Abbottabad in such a way that every group housed almost all the diverse multidisciplinary approaches. Moreover, the program was derived in such a way that in every session the instructors were switched from one group to another, on rotational basis, and every group would experience the feedback and professional input from all the fields of creative arts. Ultimately they were expected to evolve an architectonic spatial system inculcating the varied media of creative arts.

The concept plan for the ATT workshop process was as follows:

The program was jointly conducted by Ar.Shabbir-U Qureshi, the Chairman, Department of Architecture UET Abbottabad and Ar. Muhammad Faisal Rehman, the studio Instructor and focal person for this workshop. The program support team within faculty members included Artist Muneeb Aqib, Ar. Tahir Saeed and Ar. Azmat Ali Khan. This would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation of the students organizing body of Department of Architecture UET Abbottabad campus which includes Arif Shah, Muhammad Zeeshan, Maryam Khan from 4th year; Faryal Wajid, Rubab Ahmad, Tayad Ali Shah and Atta ur Rehman from 3rd year; Jalal Sheerazi and Mishal Abid from 2nd year.

For the final session jury the intensive participation by the respectable and honorable jury which included Ar. Muhammad Iqbal, Ar. Waqar Khattak, Ar. Salman Jamil, Ar. Haris Shaikh, Ar.Habib Ullah Khan, Ar. Fahad Anwar, Ar. Mir Wali Shah and Ar. Majid Khan (Chairman IAP Peshawar Chapter and chief guest for the event) is worth mentioning.

Engr. Sadiq Akbar who is the coordinator UET Abbottabad Campus, provided sincere administrative and moral support, which was very encouraging for the whole team. This supportive attitude provided the Faculty with zeal to conduct such events in future as well.

The effort is just a milestone in the field of pedagogy of creative arts in a collaborative fashion. It is anticipated that it will prove to be a paradigm shift in architectural education.
