Pakistan will lead ARCASIA

ARCASIA: A large contingent from IAP attended ARCASIA in Ayutthaya, Thailand from 11-16 November 2015. The 6 day program with the theme “Future of the Past” comprised of events starting with ARCASIA Office Bearers, Committee and Fellowship meetings.

36th ARCASIA Council Meeting was held on 12th &13th November 2015 alongside professional and technical workshop sessions followed by official and river cruise dinners.

The highlight of the event was when President IAP, Ar. Jahangir Khan Sherpao was elected President Elect at the 36th ARCASIA Council meeting on 13 November 2015 with a landslide 13-5 votes victory to the prestigious office of Architects Regional Council Asia.

He will take over end of next year as President for a two year term 2017-18. The 19 Asian Countries Institutes recognized his work as President IAP in the last three years and his services to ARCASIA as Vice President Zone-A recently, in the fields of promoting ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION and Young Architectural Teacher Training both inside Pakistan and Internationally, Sustainability and Green Architecture, Conservation and Heritage, and Social Responsibility as well as his firm and resolute commitment to Young Architects uplift and nurturing at both the IAP Country level in Pakistan and ARCASIA both. His efforts for establishing the International Roundtables were much appreciated producing tangible mid year results and Consensus Resolutions in all Architects Regional Council Asia committees. His latest efforts leading to the holding on a short notice of the “International Roundtable Summit on Post Disaster Reconstruction of Nepal” in Islamabad were much appreciated by all Architects Regional Council Asia Institutes.

This is a great honor for both IAP and PAKISTAN to lead the 19 Asian Institutes of Architects.

Earlier Ar. Zaigham Jaffery & Ar. Syed Akeel Bilgrami have served as Chairman & later Advisors to Architects Regional Council Asia and this is the third time that a Pakistani architect has been elected to this prestigious office.

A comprehensive IAP Newsletter was circulated to all the international delegates highlighting the activities that took place in the last three years which was appreciated by everyone. Ar. Syed Fawad Hussain, Editor IAP Newsletter & Journal was applauded for his efforts in compiling an impressive document showcasing the wonderful work IAP is doing in Pakistan and also the combined projects with Architects Regional Council Asia Member Countries.

Day 4 was an exciting one with a Design Analysis Forum, “Re- Articulating the Past” where three presentations were made. The 3rd ACSR Forum was held the same morning and was inaugurated by ARCASIA President, Ar. Sathirut Nui Tandanand.

Another exciting event was organized the same afternoon which was book launching ceremony of Ar. Zaigham Jaffery’s poems titled “A DROP Lost in Time”. Close friends of the author and architects from various ARCASIA member countries attended the official launch.

The Moderator was Ar. Rita Soh, Chair of ACSR while the panelists included President ARCASIA Sathirut Nui Tandanand, President – Elect ARCASIA Jahangir Khan Sherpao, Past Chairman ARCASIA Syed Akeel Bilgrami, Editor-in-Chief of Architecture Asia Magazine Lee Chor Wah from Malaysia, Chun G. Shin, Chair of ACPP from Korea and Edric M.C. Florentino from Philippines.

They all narrated stories and spoke about their acquaintance with Syed Zaigham Jaffery, their personal experiences and recited their favorite poem from his book. It was a casual affair where many friends praised him for his service to the profession and how they cherish him as a person. It was a wonderful afternoon with ended with a thank you note from the poet himself.

The same night ARCASIA Awards were held where winners received the ARCASIA Awards for Architecture. Ushna Raees from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi won first prize in the ARCASIA Student Design Competition 2015 which was another honor for Pakistan.

ARCASIA Design Research Lecture Series was organized on Day 5 alongside Travel Prize Presentations by winners from Zone A, B & C. The Moderator & Master of ceremony for this event was Ar. Fawad Suhail Abbasi, Chairman ACYA, ARCASIA Committee on Young Architects.

The same evening, Friendship Night was celebrated with cultural performances by all 19 Member countries. Singapore won first prize, Bangladesh second, Vietnam & Mongolia shared third prize. IAP received a special prize and the Best Maximalist Award 2015.

Lobpuri Tour was arranged for all delegates on the 6th and last day of Architects Regional Council Asia.

It was attended by delegates from ARCASIA & AIA. IAP official delegates were represented on ARCASIA Committee on Professional Practice ACPP, ARCASIA Committee on Social Responsibility (ACSR), ARCASIA Committee on Architectural Education (ACAE), ARCASIA Committee on Green & Sustainable Architecture (ACGSA) & ARCASIA Committee on Young Architects (ACYA) from Karachi, Lahore & Islamabad. They made presentations in each committee on the ongoing activities and code of practices in the country.

Past Chairman’s of ARCASIA, Past & Present Presidents & Vice Presidents of IAP, Past and Present Chapter Chairs, National Council Members, Young and Seniors members from IAP participated both as speakers and delegates.

Senior Fellows of IAP namely Shahab Ghani Khan, Syed Akeel Bilgrami, Suhail Abbasi, Zaigham Jaffery, Najmi Hasan were part of the delegation. Pakistan was represented by a large group of architects including President IAP Jahangir Khan Sherpao, Vice President IAP Mujahid Sadiq, Chairman PCATP Sikander Hayat Khan, Chairman IAP-KC Arif Changezi, Arif Belgaumi, Fawad Suhail Abbasi, Mumtaz Jilani, Syed Fawad Hussain, Khatijatul Kubra, Komal Pervez, Faryal Sikander, Mariam Sher Muhammad, Usman Javed and other young architects from across the country.

It was another memorable event with Pakistan being represented across the board, both as Architects Regional Council Asia Office Bearers and all committees.

IPP ARCASIA, Ar. Tan Pei Ing and President Architects Regional Council Asia appreciated the efforts and constant engagement of IAP in the fields of Architectural Education, Social Responsibility, Green & Sustainable Architecture and always coming forward for Architects Regional Council Asia Member Countries whenever there has been a need.

It is the first time in the history of Pakistan that IAP Members are holding 8 international positions in ARCASIA, UIA & CAA.

ACA 17 is scheduled for the last week of September 2016 in Hong Kong.
