Fun in Architecture & Design

Fun in Architecture

On December 2nd 2011 IAP invited Ms. Juliane Eick Aziz a German architect married and living in Islamabad to deliver a lecture on her works. Ms. Marya Maryam Alam 5th year student of Architecture from Comsats, Islamabad & Affiliate IAP opened the show and presented a slideshow on a narration of a workshop experience conducted by her last summer at Florence Institute of Design International, Italy.

She was most enthusiastic and spoke about the exciting content and her introduction to basic architectural principles that she was taught there. The course covered field tips, design, drawing and understanding of the renaissance period.

She talked about how she analyzed various buildings types, drew her idea from the architecture of various architects of Italy.

The course gave her an opportunity to explore the elementary building concepts, forms, surfaces and space along with the basic understanding of the urban context of Florence. The presentation was titled "A summer romance with Renaissance".

Another impressive presentation came from Ar. Juliane Eick Aziz who has diverse international experience and graduated from RWTH Aachen University in Germany holding her Master degree in Architecture.

She has over eight year's experience of professional practice with consultants in Canada & Amsterdam and is now an active participant in competition projects at Ahmed Zaka & Associates & OCAP - a designers Consortium.

The theme of her presentation was "Fun in Architecture & Design". She showed the audience a wonderful combination of her thesis project, various commissions she worked on as part of a team within a few offices and then some examples of other artists work in Europe who would pickup a concept and turn them into live projects in cities in and around Amsterdam and other parts of Europe.

Her presentation was a brilliant compilation of how one can take an idea, transform it into a physical model and then convert it into a fun theme. Her approach to architecture was notably interesting with colorful sketches both hand drawn & on the computer, revealing itself in elegantly composed lines & audacious forms derived from light, color and play of shadows; she showed a proposal for a park project in a competition project she worked on at Ahmed Zaka & Associates. It was a clear example of her sensitivity to the natural surroundings and her understanding of communal projects in a context like ours.

Both the presentations were thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was a wonderful evening with a packed audience comprising of architects and students from, NCA Rawalpindi, Comsats Islamabad, SADA (NUST), Islamabad & CECOS Peshawar.

The Chairman IAP - RIC, Ar. Fawad Suhail Abbasi and Hon. Secretary IAP-RIC, Ar. Faisal Arshad thanked everyone for being there which has making the lecture series a popular IAP event.

Later Chairperson PCATP, Ar. Shama Usman gave away souvenirs and certificates to the presenters.

The upcoming events include the IAP House Islamabad competition in January 2012, & IAPEX 2012 from 24-26 February 2012 at the Serena Hotel in Islamabad.
